OSSERVATORIO

Manuela Sanna – Leonardo Pica Ciamarra, The seminars of the Observatory on Humanities.
This paper introduces the text of three seminars held respectively by Carla Benedetti, Valeria Pinto and Francesco Pitocco as part of the activities of the ISPF “Observatory on Humanities”. The argument focuses on the need for a critical perspective on the current policies of research evaluation, which according to the Authors pose a threat to the identity and the future of Humanities.

Carla Benedetti, A challenge for the humanities.
This article proposes to rethink the role of the humanities avoiding any defensive position and moving rather from a self-critical reflection on the less and less incisive role that they attributed to themselves in recent decades. According to the author, the new role of humanites should be based on the awareness of the radical emergency that marks our time – i.e. the possibility of human extinction – and of the need to find new convergences with the natural sciences.

Valeria Pinto, Thanatology of critics. The journals in the age of evaluation.
This article deals with the issue of the transformation of the role of the journals induced by the new mechanisms of evaluation of research, focusing on the humanities journals as a specific form of critical culture. The thesis is that the standardization processes in progress – a policy of digitalisation which is primarily a digitization of politics – lead to the extinction of the journal as a place for the discussion of the “Fragwürdige” and to the extinction of the essay as form.

Francesco Pitocco, Untimely (?) meditations on the crisis of history and humanities.
Moving from the debate on the usefulness of history which took place after World War II, this article discusses the present crisis of humanistic culture. At that time Lucien Febvre answered back to the request that history had to be «useful for life» - as Nietzsche said -objecting that «a serving history is a servile history» and that, on the contrary, history is necessary for facing present problems, but only if it is a free construction of a critical method and thinking. Developing Marc Bloch’s thesis on the light of the experiences of the second half of the 20th century, the author confirms the fundamental role of historical consciousness for the formation of democracy and European civilization as well as for their future, being it the only possible antidote against short breath lectures of a present crisis, including the economic one, which is first of all a cultural crisis, and an indispensable tool for thinking and orienting the change.

SAGGI

Davide Monaco, Monads, mirrors and minds. Mathematical thinking and “imago Dei” in the work of Nicholas of Cusa.
This article introduces Nicholas of Cusa monadic vision of reality: the world acquires sense and value as contraction Dei, that is the ability of God’s infinite power to concentrate, individualise and actualise itself in each and every created thing by the infinite divine power. In the universal explicatio Dei the human mens has an exclusive and privileged role: it is not mere explication, but living imago Dei. The mind is defined by Nicholas of Cusa on the base of the ability to give mensura, dimension of everything: the mind measures as numerates. However our mind numerates and knows, measuring, everything on the base of a Mathematics that originates things which is the one of divine mind. The human mind is image of God’s one inasmuch this one creates everything on the base of divine Mathematics while the human mind knows everything on the base of the Mathematics generated by itself.

Salvatore Prinzi, Machiavelli and the tyranny of time.
By addressing the issue of tyranny in political life, this essay aims to subtract Machiavelli to the traditional reading that has flattened his thought as “Machiavellian” and, at the same time, to overcome the contemporary interpretation of him as a “champion” of republican freedom. In Machiavelli’s thought there is rather something tyrannical: the detection of a temporality of the political life constantly changing the scenario in which we move, not allowing us to trust in the same solutions at all times. The real tyranny is therefore that of a thoroughly modern time, the time of contingency and opportunity that we must learn to use, in order to gain the sovereign space in which “what was not, can be”.

Arab Kennouche, Ontogenesis of spirit in Vico and imaginative structures in Hegel.
This essay discusses some functions of imagination as Vico depicted them in their biblical, historical and ontogenetical aspects. The Vichian nascimento of thought as imagination aims at defining the real relationship between mind and body outside their often false opposition. The archeology of thinking does not rest on a presumptive centered substance governing the human flesh and passions, but on a network of powerful images, enabling the first humans to implement their faculty of intellection as acuity. Reason is absent from the first processes of intelligence, as they are depicted in the New Science, first of all with the “Second Fall”. Moving from here, the paper proposes a comparison with the structure of imagination in Hegel’s philosophy, taken as a model of the primacy of a logic and divinereason, and suggests a path to interpretate even Hegel’s concept of Geist through Vico’s laws of imagination.

Monica Riccio, “Too close”. Reading nearby catastrophes in Southern Italian thought at the end of the XVIIIth century.
This paper analyses the intersections between the ideas of catastrophe and revolution in Southern Italian writers at the end of the XVIIIth century, focusing on those who operated in the proximity of a natural or political upheaval. The way in which this proximity modifies the value of the concept of catastrophe is well shown by the writings of the “observers” of the 1783 earthquake in Calabria and Messina and by their effort to offer a testimony and narrate the catastrophe at present tense.

STRUMENTI

Giovanni Morrone,About the concept of identity. Traces of reflection
The Author tries to outline a concept of identity appropriate to the variety of often contrasting meanings that identity has assumed in the current debate. For this purpose the Author analyses the contrasts that concern the concept of identity on a methodological, logical and political-sociological level. He examines a series of distinctions between identity as a category of analysis and identity as a category of practice, between methodological identity and real identity, between identity as a structure of social life and identity as a product of social construction in order to define the problem of identity and its multiple aspects.

Ludovica Malknecht, Notes about phantasy and praxis in Th. W. Adorno.
In Adorno’s gnoseology, fantasy carries out an essential task. It allows thought to keep reality at a distance in a critical way, thus making its interpretation and therefore its knowledge possible. At the level of the social critique, Adorno observes a contraction (restriction) of fantasy – especially in Minima Moralia and in his writings on the crisis of the subject, in the early 1940s – that seriously influences the dynamics of progressive alienation and reification of individuals in mass society. This involves real anthropological changes that substantially alter the possibility of knowing and experiencing reality, of understanding and elaborating experience. Only can the thought that doesn’t renounce to the role of fantasy give rise to an authentic critical consciousness of reality, able to demand a transformation of reality itself.

Fabio D. Palumbo, Deleuze and Freud. Notes for a study on “The Logic of Sense”.
Can we claim that Deleuze is tacitly indebted to Freud and Freudiansm? This essay suggests that Deleuze experienced a double misunderstanding of the father of psychoanalysis. This could be ascribed to the misrecognition of the intrinsic affinities between the critical intention of Deleuze and Guattari and the materialism and anti-cartesianism that informed the Freudian program, and to the unexpected convergences with the latter. Such convergences can be traced in some passages of The Logic of Sense, through the mediation of the Kleinian lesson and the introduction of the concept of phantom – element which sublimates the libidinal energy and the erotic investment; or through dynamic homologies and structural ones with the classical psychoanalytical approach. Thus, Freud could be part of a hidden genealogy of Deleuze’s thought.

Gabriele Rizzo, The Shadows of the Deleuzian Century. Notes about “Organs without Bodies” by Slavoj Žižek.
The paper finds in the dialogue between Slavoj Žižek and Gilles Deleuze the theoretical place for a reflection on some philosophical and political issues crucial to the understanding of post-modernity. Beyond the frustrating alternative between apology and uncompromising refusal, an alternative that dominates the reception of Deleuzian thought, the paper attempts the path of a problematization which would highlight the consequences of his theoretical experimentation as well as its blind spots. Through the analysis of decisive issues such as materialism, subjectivity, politics and revolution, and within a redefinition of the philosophical coordinates of Deleuzian thought, this brief survey seeks to bring to light hermeneutical trajectories and operational concepts to guide the reading and the deconstruction of latest post-modernity.

Abstract

Matteo Palumbo, Cuoco, Foscolo and a chapter of Vico's fortune.
The paper examines the role of Vincenzo Cuoco in the intellectual history of Foscolo. The influence which he exercises acts under two points of view. Vincenzo Cuoco implies a precise judgment on the failure of the revolution of 1799: passive revolution, unable to modify the conditions of men and of their existence. Foscolo takes up the thesis of Cuoco in his writings on the Neapolitan revolution, taken as an example of the tendencies of modern history, and also in the letters of the novel Ultime lettere di Jacopo Ortis. Vincenzo Cuoco, however, does not leave to Foscolo only a model of historical judgments. Along with the other Neapolitan patriots, he contributes significantly to the movement of Giambattista Vico. Foscolo draws from the principles of the Scienza nuova especially the idea of lyric poetry. It has a theological function and legislator and shows men the eternal and universal principles of politics and morality. The meeting of exiled Neapolitan and Venetian in Milan thus becomes the laboratory of a united Italian culture

Carlamaria Lucci, Giambattista Vico as Reader and Interpreter of the Homeric Poems in the New Science (1744): between History, Anthropology and Antiquarian Studies.
The historical anthropological approach to Ancient Civilizations, and in particular to Homeric Greece, that Vico had been developing between the first and the third edition of the New Science, has been increasingly acknowledged by scholars during the last forty years. This article aims to show, basing on an analysis of the text of the third edition (1744), what, in real terms, the reading and interpretation of the Homeric Poems the Neapolitan thinker advances consisted in. Namely, I will try to show to what extent Vico’s focus on the diachronic aspects of epic tradition should be linked to a specifically philological and antiquarian interest, rather than to a generic esprit de système rooted in the so called ‘theory of the three ages’.

Roberto Evangelista, The flare of the True. Verity and History in Giambattista Vico
This Essay deals with the relation between truth and history in Vico, pointing out the human knowledge and the concept of experience in the historical development of Mankind. In this field of inquiry, I would consider the tension between the General and the Particular, and between the Abstract and the Concrete, which is developed in Vico’s thought. The problem discussed concerns both the field of  the modality of human knowledge, and the field of the right and the law. It is possible to follow the genesis of the History and its revelation in the human deeds (that is the factum) and in its link with the truth of the Providence (that is the verum). The Universali fantastici and  the fancy allow to find the real force of the human  ingenium and with it, they allow to inquiry the historical development of the providence in his concreteness, by finding the truth in the human history.

SCHEDE E SPUNTI

Leonardo Pica Ciamarra, P. Perotus. Recognition of a person mentioned in the De Ratione
This article reconstructs the identity of a person cited by G. Vico in his De nostri temporis studiorum rationewith the name P. Perotus(or Peroto, Perot, Perotti, as it has been variously translated). Vico mentions him as the naval theoretician who made an attempt to build an ideal ship according to the rules of Cartesian analytical geometry and failed miserably. For more than three hundreds years it has been impossible to identify the person and the case Vico refers to. Using documents of the time, this article propose to identify Vico's 'pater Perotus' as the French jesuit Paul Hoste, mathematician and teacher in Toulon naval school at the end of the 17th Century.
