Abstract

FULVIO TESSITORE
PAOLO ROSSI AND THE VICO PROBLEM. Paolo Rossl’s reading of Vico focuses on the confluence in the thought of the Neapolitan philosopher of an outdated scientific culture and a genial philosophical approach. The broad divergence of this interpretation not only with thè idealistic but also with the historicist one is emphasized in this article.

FABRIZIO LOMONACO
REMEMBRANCE OF GUSTAVO COSTA. Gustavo Costa (1930-2012) has dedicated his culture to the Italian literary history of thè seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, believing in its inextricable interweaving with the European philosophy of the time. In particular; at the center of his numerous writings we find Vico and thè Vichian culture, along the line of a renewed philological and philosophical sensitivity inaugurated in Naples by Pietro Piovani.

ROBERTO MAZZOLA
VICO AND THE MEDICAL CULTURE. HISTORIOGRAPHY AND PERSPECTIVES OF REASERCH. The loss oF De aequilibrio corporis animantis has prevented the reconstruction of Vico’s relationship with the medical culture of his time. However, in the writings of the Neapolitan philosopher it is possible to find plenty of Information, concepts and metaphors drawn from the medical knowledge. In this perspective it is possible to show the convergence but also the distance between Vico’s image of man and the anthropological models belonging to the medical research at the turn of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth centuries.

FULVIO TESSITORE
THE CRITICAL EDITION OF VICO AND, ESPECIALLY, OF THE NEW SCIENCE 1730 AND THE NEW SCIENCE 1744. This article traces thE origins, development and motivation of thE important Neapolitan initiative of a criticai edition of Vico’s Latin and Italian works. This edition is conducted with strict historical-philological criteria, aiming to identify thE precise phases and joints, from youth to maturity, of Vico’s imposing work.

Abstract

ENRICO NUZZO
RELIGION AND ’ORTODOXY’ IN VICO. THEOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF THE HISTORICAL RATIONALITY In discussing again the question of Vico’s ‘orthodoxy’, the essay examines the theological premises of the Vichian conception ofprovidence, and in particular its relation to a centuries-long series of discussions over the attributes of the Christian God, his potestas absoluta and his potestas ordinata. Even if the Neapolitan thinker never engages a in a systematic discussion of divine attributes in their interrelations, the theme runs through the entire Vichian corpus. In Vico’s thought the divine attributes of ’sapientia' and 'hobitas’ are pre-eminent, binding God’s will to choose and respect the general principle of the simplicity and immutahility of the historical order. Thus Vico emerges as one of the greatest‘, and certainly most fertile, heirs of the Christian tradition which characterised the divine in terms of its wisdom and goodness. The argument of essay is directed toward showing the correctness of the theological foundations of Vico’s position, but it is not intended to imply that the complex of his ideas and theses was other than marked by great risks: such as on the role of Christianity in the preservation ofnations, on the subject of miracles, etc. Ifin the Christian inspiration of his thought Vico was not a markedly 'heterodox’ thinker; neither was he an innocuous ‘orthodox’ philosopher.

TADAO UEMURA
VICO'S ZENO: READING LIBER METAPHYSICUS, CHAP. IV: DE ESSENTIIS, SEU DE VIRTUTIBUS. This paper is an attempt of reading of the chapter IV of Liber metaphysicus, which is one of the most mysterious and difficult writings ofVico. In this paper; although it is concluded that the person 'Zeno’ appeared in it is neither Zeno the Stoic nor Zeno the Eleatic, but a product of Vico’s own imagination derived from his doubt about Aristotle’s arguments against Zeno the Eleatic, a special attention is paid to the affinities between Vico’s argumentation and that of the 17th century Spanish 'Zenonists’ and that of an essay Systeme nouveau de la nature et de la communication des substances, which Leibniz published anonymously in 1695. Moreover, a minute comparison with Descartes’ theory of motion is presented.

JÜRGEN TRABANT
HOW ‘HISTORIC’ IS THE VICHIAN CIVIL WORLD? The aim of this paper is to discuss the concept of ‘historicity’ in Giambattista Vico’s philosophy. The analysis of the ‘dipintura’ shows that Vico has been misunderstood: he did not discover the historical world as expression of singular existences and he did not use the hermeneutic method as scientific method to study the historical world. ‘History’ is the diachrony of ‘mondo civile’ and the semiotic dimension characterizes it. Consequently, the science that studies it is a meta-semiotics: scientific word cannot indicate the abstract idea beyond language, hut the ensemble of the different points of view on the thing. The new science is not scientific (universality) because of destruction of particular perspectives, as Bacon suggested, but collecting them according to what they have in common. Vico’s science is in balance between universalism and particularism.

Abstract

FULVIO TESSITORE
AN INTERPRETER OF VICO: GIUSEPPE GIARRIZZO. This essay remembers the figure of Giuseppe Giarrizzo and reflects on his interpretation of Giambattista Vico’s thought. The author focuses on the theme of history and returns to the contribution given by historism to the debate which took place from the 1960s until the 1980s. An historic and historiographical analysis highlights, on the one hand, how Vico, as a political thinker; became relevant in a European context, and shows, on the other, different aspects of the encounter between the ‘New Historist' schools which have been flourishing in Naples and in Catania.

FABRIZIO LOMONACO
VICO AND EUROPEAN ENLIGHTENMENT ACCORDING TO GIUSEPPE GIARRIZZO. This article reconstructs thè historical and historiographical reasons which motivated Giarrizzo’s studies on Vico. The Sicilian scholar was particularly interested in thè heritage of Late Antiquity and Early Christianity in thè Modem Age, which he investigated in the light of erudition and philosophical history, the decline of Empires and feudalism. All these themes interested directly Vico as well as thè cultural context of Naples, which in Vico's times was undergoing deep politicai and philosophical transformations.

ALESSANDRO STILE
CORPUS; ANIMUS, MENS: ORIGINS OF (COMMUNITY’ IN VICO’S ORATIONS. This paper focuses on the analysis of some leading words such as ‘corpus’, 1animus\ cmens and 'anima’ in Vico’s work} in which a progressive way to the sense of community displays. Body and mind, parted at the beginning, recuperate their relationship in the complexity of social life.

ANDREA SUGGI
THE «MONARCHIE PER NATURA SI GOVERNANO POPOLARMENTE». VICO COMMENTS BODIN. In his Scienza nuova 1744, Giambattista Vico criticizes ]ean Bodin s thesis according to which monarchy has been thè first regime appeared in human history. Bodin, Vico writes, thought that monarchy was founded on violence and that had its model in family, especially in pater familias absolute power. But no monarchy has been possible before reason became ‘dispiegata’ : Vico opposes to Bodin’s arguments a different idea of monarchy - that Vico considered the regime in which, except the king, all citizens are equal - based on his philosophy of history.

GIUSEPPE MORO
STORIES RUNNING IN TIME. FROM CASSIRER TO VICO. This paper is focused on a specific trend in the field of vichian studies. Both Vico and Cassirer, despite their historical distance, are considered as thinkers sharing the same theoretical claim to challenge the supremacy of scientific knowledge in favour of the deeper dimension of mythical thinking. My purpose is to discuss, first, how Cassirer betrays the importance given to the mythical thinking with the primacy of the Function. Second, I argue that, in developing Scienza nuova, Vico elaborates a relationship between facts and principles that is irreducible to the primacy of the logical dimension.

Abstract

GIUSEPPE CACCIATORE
ON THE ORIGIN OF THE CONCEPTS OF INGENUITY AND PHANTASY IN VICO. The categories of phantasy and ingenuity and their cognitive and productive value are the main thread of Vico’s philosophy. These founding principles, not subject to historicisation, allow the long and articulated process of humanizing the world and nature. They represent, indeed, the initial act of wisdom, the foundation of the genetic process of human civilization. Any reflective judgement is always preceded by the inventive activity of discovering things.

GENNARO CARILLO
THE JOY OF BARBARISM. Rereading the great philosophic myth of the exit from the state of barbarism (both of sense and of reflection) restores an image of Vico as a philosopher of ignorance (objective genitive) and of limits, as well as a (classic author without being a classicist. He has become an author; indeed} in whom we can see an outcome of the anti-renaissance, or tragic humanism.

PAOLO CRISTOFOLINI
HISTORY OF WORD AND HISTORY OF THINGS. A SHORT NOTE ON VICHIAN PHILOLOGY. This Note takes off from theDe constantia philologiae and proposes Vico’s original conception of philology, in which the dominant link between words and things reaches the point of turning the Science of words into a kind of knowledge which involves all the historical matter that the Scienza nuova would deal with in the course of its development.

PIERRE GIRARD
ANTONIO GRAMSCI’S VICO. The aim of this article is to under- stand to what extent Gramsci received Vico’s philosophy through a series of philosophical and historical mediations which composed an original figure of the Neapolitan thinker. In order to estimate Vicos influence in the development of Gramsci’s thought we must highlight all these different paths which characterize the diffusion of Vichian thought in the 19th and the early 20th centuries.

FABRIZIO LOMONACO
ON METAPHYSICS AND HISTORY; THE UNIVERSAL RIGHT. This article examines two well-known translations of Vico’sUniversal Right into English and Spanish. The premises and the theoretical consequences of these editions are examined in the light of the relationship between metaphysics and history. The author intervenes directly on this subject and discusses its fundamental issues also considering ethics as a doorway to the new Science of history.

ENRICO NUZZO
VICO IN THE 18th CENTURY. VICO AMONG THE ENLIGHTENMENTS? This contribution intervenes on the revival of an historiographical trend which positioned Vico’s thinking either in the stream of  ‘radical Enlightenment’ or in the opposite one of ‘catholic Enlightenment’. Nevertheless, while it takes a position concerning these ‘categories’, the article underlines the concept of a providence which operates, in Vico’s conception, in natural very simple ways («vie semplicissime»), and must be understood by referring to the innovative and even insidious tendencies of ‘Christian philosophy’ existing in the 18th century. In this sense we can speak of a ‘third way’ between a ‘laic, heterodox Vico and a ‘catholic’ one, more or less orthodox.

MATTEO PALUMBO
PAVESE AND THE SAVAGE. This essay analyses thè category of the savage in Cesare Pavese's reflection. This writer, referring to Vico’s work, offers a more complex idea of mankind’s experience. The savage points towards the vestiges of an archaic life surviving within modem life. In Pavese, however, this term does not only have an anthropological relevance: it becomes also an aesthetic principle which drives art beyond naturalism.

BRUNO PINCHARD
EREIGNIS OR HUMANITAS? THE ANCIENT WISDOM ACCORDING TO VICO AND VIRGIL. The author revisits Heidegger’s most criticai passages regarding Roman humanism, and seeks to point out, with thè help of Vico, our civilisation’s stili unexplored possibilities. Along-side of Hölderlin’s nostalgia for thè Greeks, thanks to Vico’s poetic metaphysic a decisive place is reserved for the Antiquissima italorum sapientia.

RAFFAELE RUGGIERO
THE HISTORICAL NOTION OF NATURAL RIGHT IN VICO’S THOUGHT BETWEEN DE RATIONE AND DE UNO. The aim of this article is to retrace the dialectic development of Vico’s thesis concerning natural law. Vico chose the great theorists of natural law who flourished between the end of I7th and the beginning of l8th century as an important source of inspiration and, at the same time, as the principal opponents of his innovative System of historical interpretation.

MANUELA SANNA
THE «DIVORCE» BETWEEN LANGUAGE AND THE HEART- THE EXAMPLE OF SOCRATES. Contemporary literature is devoting much interest to thè figure of Socrates. This essay utilizes this figure in order to focus on Vico’s engagement against sectorialized and specialistic knowledge, towards a global and comprehensive function of philosophy. Vico's discussion about Socrates provides important cues to the debate on the articulation of scientific knowledge in the academic context as well as in divulgation.

JOSÉ M. SEVILLA
VICO THE MONARCHIST? A RIGHT WING RECEPTION IN THE SPANISH PRESS (1902-1936). The focus of this paper is on the reflection of the 19th century reception of Vico in some of the main right-wing Spanish journals between the early 20th century and the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. The author thus points out an interpretation of Vico’s ideas based on fascist ideological positions. At that time some well known falangist authors, including Eugenio Montes, Rafael Sànchez Masas, José Pemartin or Carlos Fernàndez Cuenca, proposed and defended the image of a conservative and monarchistic Vico, traditionalist and anti-modern.

SIX UNTIMELY OBSERVATIONS ON VICO. Against some of the most common preconceived opinions on Vico, these short observations try to state what I think are actually the most important traits of Vico’s philosophy, that it is a philosophy of the embodied mind, that the mini is embodied in poetic characters and that this philosophy is the foundation of a reai ‘science’ of the civil word. The fifth and sixth observation draw thè attention to two dark politicai visions: to thè barbarism of reflexion (‘barbarie della riflessione’) and to a world of bad metaphysics (rea metafisica) depicted in 1730 by Vico's ekphrasis of an alternative negative dipintura.

IDANTURA’S «REAL WORDS». Centred on the ‘exemplar figure of thè Scythian king Idantura, this essay focuses on the meaning and the consequences of the relationship between thè historical present and thè ideal eternai history, as well as of thè rise of ‘articulated language’ from the very process of formation of the first ‘heroic’ communities.

Abstract

The volume gathers contributions by scientists as well as historians and philosophers of science about the subject of predictability in bioscience. A cornerstone of Western science, predictability has emancipated, along the XX Century, from the deterministic framing. Biosciences played a crucial role in this process, but they also spurred the inquiry into the nature of the unpredictable, fostering the development of new epistemic approaches to complexity. The new computational tools and the exponential growth of information in the current Big Data era are reassessing the claims of predictability in the analysis of large complex systems, such as those underlying living beings, their behavior and evolution.  The book offers a critical review aimed at outlining not only the new frontiers of predictability, but especially the new configurations that the unpredictable is assuming in these research fields.
