Reading Vico

Presentazione delle nuove edizioni critiche (tedesca e italiana) della Scienza nuova 1725 e tavola rotonda sui più recenti studi critici.

Book presentation

The seminar will deal with the new readings of Vico, represented in particular by the important new scholarly editions carried out in recent years by Jürgen Trabant and Enrico Nuzzo, editors – respectively – of the German edition and the Italian edition of the Scienza nuova 1725. These two works will be discussed by well known scholars in the field of Vichian studies: Pierre Girard will speak to present the Italian edition of Vico’s work, and Francesco Valagussa will discuss the German edition instead. Both editors (Trabant and Nuzzo) will be present. In the second part of the day, however, a panel discussion will take place to discuss recent critical perspectives. The last few years, in fact, have seen a resurgence in Vico studies, and some books vividly represent this renewed attention to Giambattista Vico’s reflection. In the afternoon, therefore, recently published volumes will be discussed, beginning with Paolo Cristofolini’s book, Il coraggio della scoperta, edited by Manuela Sanna. Following this, the texts by Giuseppe Patella, Ingegno Vico, and Raffaele Ruggiero Jean-Baptiste Vico. La carrière d’un homme de lettres dans la Naples des Lumières will be discussed. Antonella Del Prete will discuss Cristofolini’s book, Pierre Girard and Roberto Evangelista will discuss – respectively – Ruggiero’s volume, and Patella’s essay
