Philological paths: critical editions of Vico, Vallisneri and Cattaneo
Critical Edition of the Works of G.B.Vico
The project for the critical edition of the complete works of Giambattista Vico, now published by Edizioni di Storia e Letteratura in Rome, was presented by Pietro Piovani in 1972, and arose from the need to return to the original Vico texts by amending them from the arbitrary interventions introduced by Benedetto Croce and especially Fausto Nicolini. Indeed, Croce’s and Nicolini’s work conditioned and directed the reading of Vico by subsequent generations of scholars, accustoming them to a completely modernized spelling, to absolutely comprehensible punctuation, to a single typeface with no diversifications. Their first and foremost aim, in fact, was to offer a ‘readable’ Vico. However – as the work on the various versions of the Scienza nuova in particular demonstrates – this communicative intent ended up paying the price of a substantial standardisation of Vico’s thought, which emphasised its homogeneity without complexity. The Vico editions that followed Nicolini’s work were affected by this same approach for a long time. On the contrary, the approach inaugurated by the ISPF’s Critical Edition was thus based on the rejection of the model provided by Nicolini to the advantage of the original editions, in order to directly confront the pathologies and problems they raise.

The programme of critical editions edited by the ISPF is marked by rigorous editorial criteria in line with the most up-to-date conception of ecdotical work applied to classical texts.
Critical Edition of the Works of A. Vallisneri
The National Edition Project, ongoing at the Editore Olschki in Florence, includes the publication of all Vallisneri’s works for a total of over 40 volumes, an inventory and the online edition of the correspondence. Each edition is accompanied by a historical-critical commentary apparatus that highlights the explicit and implicit bio-bibliographical references, and contains an introduction illustrating the characteristics and meaning of the text in the light of the author’s thought and works and placing it in the context of the debate of its time. In addition to this, a section, called ‘Biblioteca dell’Edizione Nazionale delle Opere di Antonio Vallisneri’ (Library of the National Edition of the Works by Antonio Vallisneri), hosts the volumes containing the studies and materials functional to the editorial work. A website (www.vallisneri.it) was conceived and realised as a point of reference and documentary support for the research activity connected to the Project and as a continuously updated information centre on the author, his scientific environment and the initiatives promoted by the National Edition.

Critical Edition of the Works of C. Cattaneo
Thanks to a recent agreement with the Italo-Swiss Committee for the publication of the Carlo Cattaneo’s Works, the ISPF has launched the critical edition of the writings published in the first series of the ‘Politecnico’, the journal published by the Milanese intellectual between 1839 and 1844. This work benefits from an active synergy with the Museo del Risorgimento – which houses an important part of Cattaneo’s writings -, with the Lombardy Academy of Science and Letters, and with the Departments of History and Philosophy of the State University of Milan.
